Familiarise yourself with the societies constitution and the council regulations about allotment sites. You can find both of these on our downloads page.

Start to clear anything left behind by the previous tenant.

Identify any existing produce such as fruit bushes, trees, perennial crops that you may wish to keep.

Identify any weeds (there will be plenty) with the help of our Wildlife and Weeds page and decide how best to deal with them. Avoid weed killer whenever possible, as there are often other ways of dealing with them.

Don't try to do everything in one season or you will feel overwhelmed. Instead section of the plot and work on each section thoroughly at a time rather than trying to rush and do everything. Rome wasn't built in a day and your allotment plot won't be either.

Your safety is important! Observe any Health & Safety notices and policies and use your common sense. An allotment can have hidden dangers. Stay safe!
